2012 Buckboard Day Parade

2012 Buckboard Day Parade

Rowland Heights Chinese Association & the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council will again be organizing this year’s Buckboard Parade.  It will be held Saturday, October 20, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. As joint co-hosts of this annual community event, the RHCA & RHCCC are looking for sponsors, participants, and volunteers to make this year's parade the best one yet.

The parade theme selected for this year is:
“A Diverse Community United in Service”
and will salute role models in our community who help to make Rowland Heights a wonderful place to work, live, and go to school. This outstanding community event will give everyone the chance to celebrate various schools, youth groups, bands, community clubs and organizations, equestrian units, floats, classic cars, and business contributions to our community.

This year the parade will highlight "Educational Institutions".  Dr. Ott (District Superintendent), Leslie Phillips (winning essay nominee for Grand Marshal) and Glenn Duncan (Southlands Christian School) will be symbolizing "Educational Institutions" in Rowland Heights.   Regrettably, because all three of the winning essay students will be away at college on October 20, they will not be able to participate in the parade.

This year the  Hacienda Heights Kiwanis and Walnut Valley Rotary will be jointly sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast at 7a.m. preceeding the Parade.  Come early and have breakfast with us at the Bell Memorial Church (parking lot), on Nogales near Colima.

The parade route will on start on Nogales Avenue south of Colima Road proceeding north, turn east (right) on Colima Road, turn north (left) on Banida Avenue, and conclude at Rowland Heights County Park, to be followed by a community festival organized by the Rowland Council PTA and the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Parties interested in sponsorship, parade participation, staff volunteering, etc should send an email to buckboardparade@hotmail.com.

Grand Marshal Essay and Parade Theme Winners

Congratulations to the
Grand Marshal Essay and Parade Theme Winner
This year the Rowland Heights Buckboard Days Parade and Festival will be on October 20, 2012.
Early this year the Parade Committee made the decision to reach out to high school seniors at Nogales High, Rowland High, Santana, and Southland's Christian School.  The task was for them to nominate someone who makes Rowland Heights a better place to live, and then write an essay telling about their nominee, explaining why the person was selected, then giving examples of what the nominee had done to be selected.

The Parade Committee's second request was for theme suggestions for the parade.

CONGRATULATIONS on a job well done go to:
The winning Grand Marshal essay writer was Jasper Luong, Rowland High School senior, who nominated Teacher/ASB Adviser, Leslie Phillips, who does outstanding work for the community.   Jasper will receive a $250 prize from the Parade committee;
second place Grand Marshal essay was from Derrick Mar, Rowland High School senior, who nominated teacher/coach, Gordon Hamlow
third place Grand Marshal essay was from Jian-Sen Wu, Rowland High School senior .who nominated teacher, Kelli Reese.

The committee made the decision to highlight "Educational Institutions" for this year's parade.  Dr. Ott (District Superintendent), Leslie Phillips (winning essay nominee for Grand Marshal) and Glenn Duncan (Southland's Christian School) will be symbolizing "Educational Institutions" in Rowland Heights.   Because all three students will be away at college on October 20, regretfully, none can be in the parade.

The parade theme selected for this year combined two school suggestions:
“A Diverse Community United in Service”
and will salute role models in our community, who help to make Rowland Heights a wonderful place to work, live, and go to school. This outstanding community event will give everyone the chance to celebrate various schools, youth groups, bands, community clubs and organizations, equestrian units, floats, classic cars, and business contributions to our community.

Teri Malkin was chair of the essay and theme selection committee.
Sue Ann Tai of the Rowland Heights Chinese Association and Lynne Ebenkamp of the Rowland Heights Community Coordinating Council are co-chairs of the parade this year.
